What a day this has been!!!

 Saturday, July 8

It started with refueling the planes

and then a marvelous 2.5 hour flight from Watertown, NY (KART) to Akron-Jesson Airport (9G3) in Akron, NY. Just the type of flying I love: smooth air, blue skies with almost endless visibility, flying with Lake Ontario on my right and seeing fields, farms, and forests below and to my left. It's so calm and peaceful and always interesting. I was at 1500-1800' most of the way.

We stopped at Akron to go see Niagara Falls - from the American side. Oregon has only recently begun to issue the new driver licenses which allow you to go to and return from Canada and Mexico; I don't yet have one and I didn't think to bring my passport. I've never seen the American Falls and it was beyond spectacular!

We really splurged today. We rented a Nissan Sentra and our first order of business was to get something to eat. We stopped at the most amazing ice cream place: over 40 varieties of ice cream, and about a dozen types of pie. We both had pie and ice cream - my idea of a great lunch.

Then on to Niagara Falls. I found my vocabulary embarrassingly limited. All I could say was "WOW!!!" and "WOW!!!" and "WOW!!!"

We hiked to Prospect Point and then across a bridge to Goat Island. It was warm but not excessively so, and we took our time. The people-watching was second only to seeing the Falls.

Tomorrow we'll be heading for upper Michigan. We've been invited to drop in at several private airstrips and we're looking forward to it.

We're also starting to talk about EAAirventure. Looks like we'll be there quite early - maybe as soon as the 15th or 16th. That's great for Dennis, who needs the time to fly home to Searcy, AK, and drive his RV back to Oshkosh while a friend flies his plane to OSH. I'll have to figure out what to do with myself...probably tie down my plane, set up my tent, and head for the Volunteer Booth.

Here's our track for today.

  1. Arty, love following your adventures, look at Buck Knob, WI for an RC flyin with large RC & regular planes. It’s a blast and gives you a break before Oshkosh. We’ll be there, so bring it on!
